Puzzles, turrets, and companion cubes. If you're looking for a fun new take on the shooter genre, look no further than Portal: Still Alive for the Xbox 360.
Portal: Still Alive is a re-release from the popular PC title, now ported to the Xbox with new levels, new features, but all the same portal action for your console. The best thing about Portal is that the makers of Half-Life 2 have given us something fresh and new to tackle in the FPS world. While there are no live enemies to speak of in the game, the awesome "Portal gun" allows players to shoot mini wormholes onto surfaces and teleport themselves or other objects almost anywhere around levels in order to solve puzzles often involving boxes, elevators and even deadly fire pits!
There is a story mode, which consists of linked obstacle courses where the player must move on from each test, each time learning a new technique like "flinging" where a player uses the momentum from falling to pop out another portal and fly completely over a huge gap that can't be jumped over normally. This builds up to a duel with an evil Artificial Intelligence computer at the conclusion of the game that is both epic and funny at the same time. Throughout the game the computer's female voice both helps and teases the player at the same time, knowing that certain doom awaits around the next corner if you're not careful of her traps. There are also challenge modes, where players can earn points for completing levels using speed or accuracy and unlock secret achievements.
Made by the same team who gave us Half-Life 2, Portal: Still Alive takes the shooter genre and turns it on its head by giving us cool environments, traps, and creepy computer voice overs, as well as the most fun weapon ever in gaming. Definitely worth picking up if you're an Xbox 360 owner.
